Dementia Action Week 21-27 May 2018

The Alzheimer's Society is asking people to do something for Dementia Action Week. They want people to choose an action and stand united with people affected by Dementia.

One of the actions the Alzheimer's Society have listed on their website is for people to take is to "Ask questions and learn about Dementia".

Online Dementia Training Course

Included in EduCare for Health & Social Care, our e-learning service for the Health and Care sector, is a course on Dementia which raises awareness and understanding of the signs and symptoms of mental health conditions, dementia and learning disabilities and explains how to help people to exercise their rights. The course also provides guidance on delivering person-centred care and covers the fundamentals of capacity and consent.

To mark Dementia Action Week, and to help the people who have chosen to learn about Dementia as their action, we are sharing content from the course in a series of blogs.

Blog One: What is Dementia?

Care Certificate Training

The Care Certificate is an agreed set of standards that sets out the knowledge, skills and behaviours expected of specific job roles in the health and social care sectors. It's made up of the 15 minimum standards that should be covered if you are 'new to care' and should form part of a robust induction programme. Our e-learning service for the health and care sector maps to the Care Certificate and our dementia training course specifically meets the requirements of Standard 9: "Awareness of mental health, dementia and learning disabilities".

Documentation on the Skills for Care website states that to meet Standard 9 learners must:

  • 9.1 Understand the needs and experiences of people with mental health conditions, dementia or learning disabilities
  • 9.2 Understand the importance of promoting positive health and wellbeing for an individual who may have a mental health condition, dementia or learning disability
  • 9.3 Understand the adjustments which may be necessary in care delivery relating to an individual who may have a mental health condition, dementia or learning disability
  • 9.4 Understand the importance of early detection of mental health conditions, dementia and learning disabilities
  • 9.5 Understand legal frameworks, policy and guidelines relating to mental health conditions, dementia and learning disabilities
  • 9.6 Understand the meaning of mental capacity in relation to how care is provided

As part of our support for Dementia Action Week, we are offering 10% off the cost of the entire Health & Social Care e-learning service.
