New Domestic Abuse training course written in partnership with SafeLives
Every day children and young people experience domestic abuse at home and can suffer a wide range of severe and long-lasting effects.
Domestic Abuse: Statistics
- 130,000 children live in homes where there is high risk of domestic abuse.
- One in three women and one in eight men will experience domestic abuse from the age of 16 years.
- Around one in five children have been exposed to domestic abuse.
- Domestic abuse is a factor in over half of all serious case reviews.
- A third of children witnessing domestic abuse also experienced another form of abuse.
- A quarter of children living with high risk domestic abuse are under three-years-old.
What is the impact of Domestic Abuse on Children and Young People?
Several studies have shown that children who are exposed to domestic abuse are more likely to be victims or perpetrators as adults. When children witness domestic abuse, they can demonstrate symptoms similar to post traumatic stress disorder including bed-wetting, sleep disturbances, flashbacks and rocking.
The impact on education and achievement can be varied. School may be a source of help and sanctuary from problems at home, or children can experience an inability to concentrate, causing them to perform below their expected ability.
How to support children
Domestic abuse will affect children differently depending on their age and individual circumstances. While some children grow up apparently unscathed, others exhibit emotional and behavioural disorders.
However, there are a range of protective factors that can help children and young people cope with the recovery from the domestic abuse.
New domestic abuse training course

To help support children and young people who are affected by domestic abuse, we have created a new online training course in partnership with SafeLives, a national charity dedicated to ending domestic abuse, for good.
Domestic Abuse: Children and Young People will help learners:
- understand what domestic abuse is
- understand what controlling and coercive behaviour are
- understand the prevalence of domestic abuse
- know what the key risk factors and protective factors are
- understand the impact domestic abuse has on children at different ages
- know what support is available.
The course costs £18.50 to buy online or is included in our online learning service for education or health.
Service level customers should already be able to access the new course when they log on to EduCare’s learning platform.
Domestic Abuse: Children and Young People is the 3rd course that has been added to our education service this year, without changing the cost. It follows new courses on Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking, Serious Youth Violence and Administration of Medication.
