Safer Internet Day 2018: It starts with us

Safer Internet Day 2018: It starts with us

For Safer Internet Day this year the UK Safer Internet Centre are encouraging people to share the kind things they will do online or to pledge to take a positive action to make the internet a better place.

For our contribution, we are sharing practical advice for adults to help children and young people stay safe online.

Safeguarding children and young people is everyone’s business

When it comes to safeguarding and duty of care, online safety is essential to support the wellbeing of children and young people because there is a wide range of harm that can come via the internet and offline and online abusive activities are often intertwined.

What should adults do?

  • Listen and take the child seriously.
  • Make sure the child is safe and feels safe.
  • Don’t overreact.
  • Encourage the child not to retaliate.
  • Gather the facts and save the evidence.
  • Get the child to help solve the problem.
  • Teach self-esteem and resilience.
  • Talk to the child’s school if there are links with the bullying.
  • Encourage the child to reach out to friends.

Educating ourselves first gives us the knowledge to empower children and young people with the know-how to safeguard themselves and their personal information. Teaching children how to stay safe online is something that should be nurtured throughout a child’s early and middle years, right through adolescence to see them into adult life.
